Mutha-Falcon "Ego Death" Loosie Review

Get your neck braces ready—the birds are back. This time, they’re mad… well, I suppose they were mad in the last album, too.

I guess they’re still mad.

But the great thing about Denton’s own boho, 5-piece, punk outfit is that they are pissed off on your behalf. Because we all know the self-knighted small-town celebrity. The snob who’s a snob for no conceivable reason. Have not we all been a victim of their unsolicited douchebaggery?

If the answer is “yes”—then let me just say, Diya and co are havin’ none of that.

"Ego-Death," another lyric-driven, character snipe sets its crosshairs between the eyes of the town lunk—and oh buddy is the lunk-alarm sounding off. Front-lady Diya Craft erupts on the track, carrying it through with fist-pumping one-liners “[there’s] plenty of things money can’t buy/like a new attitude.” Damned be the use of fish-and-pond colloquialisms—Craft prefers a more, shall we say, direct approach. "Grow the f— up," she scolds.

And don't confuse the lack of 3-feet mohawks and combat boots as a rejection of classic 90s punk rock. These sunny guitars smelted over the garage-rock drums will warm the heart of any Rancid fan or pre-aughts purple-haired, JNCO-jeans wearin' Warped Tour teen. And speaking of Warped, Falcon could easily open for the likes of Black Flag or Bad Religion. And yes, that would come with an inevitable helping of social commentary and anti-establishment tropes; all making this track appealing to both the head-nodding 30-somethings and the head-banging 20-somethings.

Diya and gang are generating some pretty deserved media attention. Their new documentary, produced by local aspiring filmmaker, Hayley Knight, has just made it into Denton's 2020 annual ThinLine Fest. And with several write-ups, busy tour schedule and bustling social media, Mutha-Falcon is posed for a pretty sick 2020.
